Bastrop County, along with the cities of Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville, and Keep Bastrop County Beautiful, will host a county-wide Household Hazardous Waste collection event on Saturday, May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m. (or until maximum volume of the program is reached) at Mayfield Park in Bastrop. Household Hazardous Waste disposal typically costs $60 per household, but will be free of charge with this event.

For a complete list of what people can bring to the collection event, go to keepbastropcountybeautiful.org. Examples include household chemicals, batteries, lawn and garden chemicals, poisons, paints and varnishes.

“Bastrop County and the cities of Bastrop, Elgin, and Smithville have been planning this event for about a year,” said County Commissioner Willie Piña. “We applied for and received a grant from CAPCOG/ TCEQ, have had program support through Keep Bastrop County Beautiful, and have received sponsorships from numerous organizations. This event is truly an example of the county, the cities, non-profits and businesses coming together to improve the health and safety of our community.”

Sponsoring organizations include Seton, Bluebonnet Electric Coop, Balcones Resources, Allied Waste, BEFCO and Piña.

Keep Bastrop County Beautiful spokesperson Dorothy Skarnulis also noted that proper management of household hazardous waste is important because these wastes, disposed of improperly, can lead to environmental degradation, injury to sanitation workers, contamination of groundwater and can lead to costly HAZMAT cleanups.
