April showers may mean May flowers, but the return of May also means the return of summer break is just around the corner.

And that means it’s time for the Almost There Fair and Family Resource Expo.

This annual event is set for 4-7 p.m., Friday at Cedar Creek Elementary School, 5582 FM 535 in Cedar Creek.

Fourth-grade teacher at the school and event organizer Christine Chrispen said the event — a fundraiser for the Cedar Creek Elementary School PTA — is designed to be a good time and an evening of fun for the whole family.

“It’s good, clean family entertainment,” Chrispen said. “There will be food, fun, games and information for everyone.”

The fair will include booths offering information from the school district’s after-school program, ACE, as well as information from the district’s drug-awareness program and from community programs such as Livestrong, Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 1, Children’s Advocacy Center and from the migrant/homeless program.

The event will include many of the usual games and fun fair offerings such as hairspraying, milk ring tosses, a cake walk and more, Chrispen said, but it will also combine the fair with the family resource expo for the first time.

The family resource aspect of the event will include information and workshops on study skills, parental involvement, safety, teen substance abuse, applying for and paying for college, support for cancer survivors and much more. Many of the workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish, Chrispen said.

In the past, she noted, the family resource expo was held separately from the fair, which was always held the first Friday in May — coinciding with the completion of the construction on the school, some 20 years ago now.

But this year, Chrispen said, the organizers decided to combine the two events to hopefully be a bigger draw all around.

“The fair was going to be Friday night and the expo Saturday morning, but we decided since Saturday’s usually so busy for everyone with sports and other things, we’d combine the two,” she said. “We believe it’ll make a big difference. Everyone will be able to come by and attend both events.”
